(FREE) Hymn Collections

This page offers free PDF downloads of historical hymn collections, which contain some of the finest harmonizations of hymns ever devised (especially Ralph Vaughan Williams’ harmonizations, which stand without equal). These are valuable historical documents in themselves. Hymns and chorales (which are synonymous) are indispensable for pianists because they train and build up more skills than any other style of music. Piano students and teachers tend to overemphasize virtuoso music and neglect the simple and direct playing of four-part harmonies, a skill in which far too many pianists are lacking. Selected hymns from these volumes are performed, taught, and analyzed on The Well-Rounded Pianist!

THE CHORALE BOOK FOR ENGLAND (1863)

0.00

Excellent collection and beautiful engraving of over 200 mostly German-Lutheran influenced chorales, edited by prominent composer William Sterndale Bennett (1816-1875) and prolific music editor Otto Goldschmidt (1829-1907). Texts are translated by the prolific Catherine Winkworth (1827-1878).

ATTENTION: The note alignment rules were different throughout most of the 1800s in that notes that we are used to seeing vertically aligned, and thus played at the same time, are often not aligned properly according to our modern rules. Nevertheless, the engraving of this collection is gorgeous and easy to read once one becomes familiar with the different alignment rules.
