Cory Hall, founder and president of BachScholar®, is primarily and pianist and teacher with a special gift for composing sacred and secular character works and exciting ragtime arrangements. His piano transcription of Bach's Toccata & Fugue in D Minor, BWV 565, for organ has been BachScholar's #1 best-selling title for two years in a row! Drawing upon his experience as a classical and ragtime pianist, church organist, born-again Christian, as well as interests in popular, rock and folk music, Hall has grafted a truly unique, innovative, and eclectic musical style all his own. His works, often described as "timeless," are distinguished by simple and folksy melodiousness, touching lyricism, and alluring harmonies layered over rich, orchestral-like textures. Moreover, rhythm in all its aspects plays a major role in Hall's works as syncopation, changing meters, and metric modulation feature prominently. Hall's experience of over 40 years as a pianist and his intimate knowledge of the piano and its capabilities have imbued him with the ability to compose some of the most "performer-friendly," idiomatic, and profoundly rich piano music on the market today. Vernon Taranto, Jr. has been composing music for forty-five years and has written in every genre and for virtually every combination of instruments and/or voices in a wide variety of eclectic styles, but generally in an idiom which has been called "lyric atonality." His first piece of published music appeared in 1970, when he was twenty-three. His first symphony, commissioned by the Georgetown Symphony Orchestra, was premiered when he was twenty-five, though his first orchestral piece, Soliloquy for Orchestra, was presented in 1966 by The New Orleans Philharmonic, Werner Torkanowsky, conductor.
Vernon received his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in 1983 from Louisiana State University where he studied composition with Kenneth Klaus, James Drew, and Dinos Constantinides. A tour of duty with the United States Air Force Band (1969–75) brought his compositions to national and international exposure beginning with the premiere, on the US Capitol Steps (Washington, DC), of his Fantasie On an American Folk Song.
Since then, Dr. Taranto has taught music theory and composition at Louisiana State University, Nicholls State University, and St. Petersburg College, where he is currently on faculty, and Director of Choral Activities. His music is widely published and performed and appears in recorded form on at least eight compact discs by various artists.
His professional career includes (besides the five years with the Air Force) nine performance tours of Japan (with his wife-singer, Mary Ann) and two presentations of his original compositions at Carnegie Hall, New York City. Locally, Vernon's music has been performed by The Florida Orchestra and The Tampa Bay Symphony.
